Frequently Asked Questions: Mississippi Pawn Software & Regulations
1. Can PPSS calculate Mississippi's 25% pawnshop charge?
Yes. You can configure the software to apply the 25% monthly charge as defined in §75-67-313. You set the rate in the software's fee settings, and PPSS will calculate the charge on each transaction based on the principal and time elapsed. The software can also account for the provision that the charge is deemed earned monthly on the same day of each successive month.
2. How can the software help with the 30-day hold period after maturity?
PPSS can be configured to track the maturity date and then count the 30-day hold period. You can set the software to flag items as "in hold" during this period and change their status after the 30 days expire. The software does not automatically prevent sale or removal; you and your staff are responsible for ensuring compliance with Mississippi's forfeiture laws.
3. Does PPSS handle the different hold periods for purchased goods?
For purchases (not pawns), Mississippi requires a 21-day hold for paper reporting or 14-day hold for electronic reporting (§75-67-309). You can configure separate transaction categories in PPSS with different hold period tracking to help manage these requirements.
4. What about reporting to law enforcement?
PPSS allows you to export transaction data in common formats (CSV, text) that you can then provide to local police departments. The software does not automatically submit reports; you control the export and delivery process.
5. Does the software prevent accepting prohibited items?
PPSS is a recordkeeping tool. It does not physically inspect items or prevent transactions. You can use the software's category and notes fields to document items, but you and your staff are responsible for complying with all legal prohibitions, such as not accepting property with altered serial numbers (§75-67-315).
